WASHINGTON, Oct. 8, 2019

FrontierView is excited to announce a new index and report, the Global Digital Sophistication Index, in collaboration with the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business. The Global Digital Sophistication Index focuses on two areas of digital readiness—ability to engage with customers online and ability to sell online using e-commerce—to help multinational companies make tactical decisions about their digital presence around the world and prioritize resources accordingly. It is designed for maximum geographic coverage, providing a proprietary digital sophistication index of 147 markets globally.

Students from Maryland Smith worked closely with FrontierView on the semester-long project, gathering the data and identifying sources and indicators for the index. “It was wonderful to work with the students from the University of Maryland,” said Martina Bozadzhieva, managing director and head of research at FrontierView, who led the project. “Their research was invaluable, and it was such a hands-on way for them to gain experience working on a topic that is a growing priority for multinational companies.”

As companies scale their digital strategies globally, they need to understand the digital landscape in the markets where they hope to build an online presence. That’s where the students’ research comes in. The Global Digital Sophistication Index helps multinational executives assess which markets may be more ready for heavy investment in digital marketing and e-commerce infrastructure and where growth in digital sophistication is high, indicating a large digital opportunity.

“Our collaboration with FrontierView gave students a great opportunity to work with a real-world client,” said Smith professor Mark Wellman, who advised the capstone project in his Global Consulting Fellows course. “As we have interacted with other firms the index has been received positively with a focus on how it can drive growth.” The Global Digital Sophistication Index is supporting global companies by tracking which markets have digital sophistication levels that are increasing rapidly, where a foothold today—even if a bit early—can translate into a large strategic advantage tomorrow.
