William sets out three main risk factors multinationals should monitor:
- Lack of capacity: Ethiopia’s severe lack of hospital beds, healthcare professionals, and basic equipment will undermine COVID-19 treatment and increase the pandemic’s socioeconomic costs.
- Strained public finances: Weaker government revenues and high debt servicing costs will strain public finances, making the government reliant on donors to fund health initiatives. Cutbacks could impact certain non-essential infrastructure schemes and their suppliers.
- Heightened political risks: Frustration over delayed COVID-19 containment measures and their impact on informal business activity could inflame existing political tensions.
